Copenhagen Beer Week is here

The 2nd to 9th of May 2020, something very special is happening on the Danish beer scene, as the first edition of Copenhagen Beer Week will take place. Copenhagen Beer Week is a brand new and unique initiative supported by over 35 breweries from all over Denmark, who for this occasion will join forces and bring Danish craft beer and brewing culture into the spotlight.

Over the course of the past 20 years, we have seen an exponential development in the Danish craft beer market, which has expanded from less than 20 breweries in 2000 to over 200 in 2019. In 2019, almost 2000 new beers have been launched. Now, a number of breweries in Denmark have united their forces, displaying the diversity of the Danish craft beer scene today.

Copenhagen Beer Week seeks to celebrate Danish craft beer as the tremendously tasty and varied drink that it is, particularly emphasizing the relationship between beer and food. Even though the Danish food scene has seen a gastronomic revolution in recent years, beer has yet to follow suit as the preferred drink at the dining table. Moreover, the ambition is to bring the beer into museums, galleries and laboratories to shed light on how beer has contributed to the social, cultural and economic development of Danish society – and continues to do so.

“ÅBEN” is one of Denmark’s youngest craft breweries and has recently been awarded the title as Danish Brewery of the Year 2019. Founder and general manager Philip Hulgaard explains:

“If our participation, can contribute to the creation of great experiences for the beer geeks as well as for the more general curious minds, who want to explore the world of beer, then we have achieved what we want. We hope that by teaming up with all of the other great breweries in Copenhagen Beer Week, we can mark the beginning of yet another great beer tradition in Denmark, whilst also expanding the acknowledgement of Danish beer craft internationally.”

A varied program all around beer

‘Tap-takeovers’ at your local bar, special food and beer pairings, a relaxing yoga+beer class or a tasty lecture about the history of beer? Copenhagen Beer Week will have it all – and so much more. The complete program will be released in early Spring next year.

While events will take place in restaurants, bars, galleries and a variety of other locations all over Copenhagen, the week-long program is rounded off by a two-day festival at Israels Plads in central Copenhagen on May 8th and 9th. Here, a large number of breweries from all over Denmark will present and sell their tasty products to many curious and thirsty guests who can look forward to a diverse selection of tasty food, as well as an entertaining program with room for music, talks and debates.

As part of Copenhagen Beer Week, Mikkeller is once more hosting its annual Beer Celebration ‘MBCC’, displaying the coolest breweries from around the world – and only a few tickets are still available.

Founder and CEO of the International brewery success Mikkeller, Mikkel Borg Bjergsø, is one of the initiators behind Copenhagen Beer Week:

“For some years now we have held Mikkeller Beer Celebration Copenhagen as well as Mikkeller Beer Week, which both mainly attrachs beer-geeks and hardcore Mikkeller-fans. While the vast majority of our guests are foreigners, many of the locals here in Copenhagen have no idea that an international beer event of such magnitude is even taking place. For that reason we would like to embrace and support Copenhagen Beer Week – and thus create a beer-festival for all of Copenhagen.”
