Mikkeller opens second location in Shanghai

Less than a year after the opening of Mikkeller Shanghai, the craft beer company now launches its second location in the Chinese metropole. The new combined bar and restaurant is situated in the rapidly expanding area of Xintiandi, New Heaven and Earth.

Based on the warm reception of Mikkeller’s tasting room and bar in Jing’an, the Danish craft beer company has now expanded its Shanghai operation to the Huangpu District, more specifically the area of Xintiandi (New Heaven and Earth), an affluent pedestrian-only lifestyle center offering shopping, dining and entertainment. The district is most notably composed of re-developed, traditional mid-19th century Shikumen houses, and the site of the first congress of the Communist Party of China, which makes it a must-visit area for both local and international tourists.

“This new location provides us with a wonderful opportunity to expose more people to our craft,” says Martin Aamodt, the Shanghai based Dane and manager of Mikkeller Shanghai, who along with his Chinese wife Chen Xiao Min has been the leading local force behind the success of Mikkeller’s first Shanghai bar in Jing’an. The location opened in June last year, just as China came out of lockdown.

Right from the beginning, the bar has been extremely well visited and was the best performing bar of all Mikkeller’s bars in the very unusual year of 2020.

Danish design and cuisine

Mikkeller’s new Xintiandi layout is spread over two floors and in addition to the bar has a restaurant on the top floor with a cozy atmosphere and a great street view from a huge window overlooking the busy area. The restaurant will be serving classic Danish cuisine with a contemporary touch, paired with ten taps of rotating seasonal craft beers. The menu consists of fourteen core offerings, accompanied by daily specials and a weekend brunch. A larger selection of bottled and canned beers is also available for drink-in and take-out.

The heightened use of Danish design elements and vibrant colors are also identifying factors. Mikkeller’s interior designer Camilla Monsrud, who also designed the beautiful bar and tasting room in Jing’an, has used some of the same core elements in the new design; warm wood contrasting concrete walls supplemented with traditional Danish design objects and elements. Because of the unique historical character of the area, Monsrud also sought to add a sophisticated touch with brass details and elegant, simple color combinations.

The combination of high-quality design and beer will bring something brand new and missing to Xintiandi, says the Shanghai manager:

“Our latest venture couldn’t come at a better time. Xintiandi is undergoing rapid expansion and rejuvenation, and craft beer isn’t particularly well represented. We intend to change that.”
